IWC Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium: The Icon in Dark Mode

IWC Schaffhausen has given one of its best-known watches a completely new look. The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium® (Ref. IW371631) is the first all-black version of the Portugieser Chronograph. It is limited to 1,500 pieces.
A design classic since 1998
The Portugieser Chronograph was introduced in 1998 as part of the Portugieser collection. It is easy to recognise by its two vertically aligned subdials and the quarter-second scale on the inner flange, and IWC counts it among its most recognisable and popular designs. Our article A series of Portuguese tells more about the collection's history.
IWC's Creative Director Christian Knoop says the all-black execution "is different from anything we have ever done before".

What is Ceratanium?
Ceratanium® is a material developed by IWC. It is based on a special titanium alloy that is fired in a kiln at high temperatures. The result is as light and robust as titanium, but almost as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic, with a distinctive dark metallic finish. On this watch, the case, crown and pushers are all made of Ceratanium.
Black on black
The dial is black, and so are the applied Arabic numerals, the indices and the quarter-second scale, which stand out only as subtle raised elements. The hands are black too. The watch is worn on a black rubber strap with a square pattern, matched to the colour of the case.
In-house chronograph movement
Inside is the IWC-manufactured calibre 69355, a mechanical chronograph controlled by a column wheel, which gives clearly defined switching and a precise feel on the pushers. It winds automatically with a double-pawl system and has a power reserve of 46 hours.
