IWC Unveils a Purple-Dial Pilot's Chronograph for the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team
IWC Schaffhausen has presented a new team watch for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team: the Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref. IW388121). Its deep purple dial was created as a tribute to the Singapore Grand Prix.
IWC has been the team's official engineering partner since 2013, and this is the fourth official team watch. The team's drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, appear in IWC's launch images, and the watch is worn by team members at the track and at the team's headquarters in Brackley. The partnership between the two brands goes back further; we covered its early years in IWC and AMG: a partnership of technology.
A dial inspired by an orchid
The purple colour comes from Vanda Miss Joaquim, the orchid that is Singapore's national flower. The numerals and indices are printed in the team's PETRONAS green, and the hands carry a green luminescent coating, which makes the contrast with the purple dial especially strong.
Titanium case and an in-house chronograph
The 41 mm case is made of brushed Grade 5 titanium. Inside is the IWC-manufactured calibre 69385, a mechanical chronograph built around a column wheel. Its bidirectional pawl winding system provides a 46-hour power reserve. The movement, decorated with Geneva stripes and circular graining, can be seen through a sapphire glass case back.
The watch comes on a purple rubber strap. Thanks to IWC's EasX-CHANGE system, the strap can be swapped quickly for another one.
