New Speedmaster «First Omega in Space» Watch at the World Exhibition BaselWorld 2012

Connoisseurs of Horology remember that the Omega Speedmaster watch passed very stringent tests before being approved for use in manned space expeditions of NASA, starting in the 1st of March, 1965. But even two and a half years before the astronaut Walter Schirra took with him into space its own Speedmaster watch. Walter Schirra wore the watch during a mission of "Mercury-Atlas 8" in October 1962.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first Speedmaster watch, flown in space orbiting of the Earth, the company Omega has released the Speedmaster «First Omega in Space» watch (First Omega watches in space) in honor of Walter Schirra and his historical wristwatch, which he bought in a jewelry store in Houston, more than half a century ago.
The new Speedmaster «First Omega in Space» watch was presented at the world exhibition of watches and jewelry BaselWorld 2012.

Inside the brushed stainless steel with a diameter of 39.70 mm is placed the legendary caliber 1861, which is famous for having been used in the legendary Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. The round steel case of the model has a black aluminum bezel with a tachymeter scale.
The domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal covers a classic lacquered black dial, which during 55 years was a feature of the Speedmaster chronograph. The black dial is equipped with 30-minute and 12-hour counters, located at the 3 and 6 o’clock positions, respectively. Small seconds hand is at the 9 o’clock position. Time indexes and central hands are coated with luminous substance of Super-LumiNova.

The screwed caseback of the novelty, made of stainless steel, is decorated with the brand’s logo - the image of the seahorse and inscriptions «THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE» and «OCTOBER 3, 1962" - the date of the "Mercury-Atlas 8" space mission.
Each instance of the model Speedmaster «First Omega in Space» is numbered. The number is engraved on the back side of the case.
To buy the Speedmaster «First Omega in Space» watch will be available on a brown leather strap with beige stitching. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters.
