1940 Radiomir 3 Days by Panerai
In 1940, Panerai watch workshops in Florence created a new case, designed by taking into account the wishes of the representatives of the Italian Navy. It was a continuation of the sample in 1936, known today under the name Radiomir, which originally meant a luminescent material, patented by Panerai. It was supposed to provide excellent readability of the dial in the dark. In addition to this material, other changes are made in the design of the watch, which served to increase the strength and reliability.
The new case has no lugs made of steel wire as before. This design has a great risk to jump off the strap mounts during the execution of heavy subsea operations. In the model of 1940s, the lugs became the part of the case, which added reliability to fastening the strap. The strap system is also changed, it has become easier and more reliable. Prior to this, it was necessary to wrap the strap around a steel wire and staple. The new system consists of the following - steel tubes that go into the hole in the lugs, are inserted in to the case.
Along with these changes in the design of Radiomir there are others: pillow-shaped case became less accentuated, the crown has become bigger and took a cylindrical shape, and thickness of the watch increased from 15 to 17 mm.
Therefore, the case Radiomir 1940 was "born", which is now presented again by the known watchmaker Officine Panerai - a more subtle and in new models.
