Hublot presents an innovative precious metal Magic Gold
A wristwatch in gold case, not affected by external damages - sounds like something impracticable. But the dream of watchmakers the watch company Hublot has realized, presenting its new patent Magic Gold.
The work on the project began three years ago under the leadership of CEO Hublot Mr. Biver and Professor Andreas Mortensen, the director of Mechanical Metallurgy laboratory of EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne). In the result of the researches has been developed an alloy of 18-karat gold, which is harder than tempered steel. The company is so far the only user of the innovation.
The main disadvantage of a gold watch is the need for periodic polishing and grinding of the case. Gold is soft metal and affected to scratches. Because of this 24-karat gold is rarely used in watchmaking, and 18-karat gold has only recently began to be applied. Historically, the 14-karat gold has become the most popular for creating buildings, as it is very difficult to scratch these cases, despite the low gold content.
To solve the problem of scratches when using a higher gold samples, namely 18-carat gold, was conceived of the project. Despite the fact the works on the Magic Gold has not yet been completed, the composite has passed the experimental stage, and the company expects to launch Hublot watches with cases from Magic Gold at the forthcoming exhibition Baselworld 2012.
"The colour is golden, but it can be easily distinguished from the usual gold, - says Mr. Biver. - The color is not yet finalized in its definition but we want to have a special color for the Magic Gold ». Magic Gold will also be used to create watch components.
CEO of Hublot Mr. Biver had given assurances that this process will be used to create special alloys of platinum, palladium, aluminum, copper, nickel, and even silver. "Cases of this material do not scratch and undergo oxidation," - he promised.
