Eastern Hemisphere on the Piaget Altiplano Scrimshaw Watch Dial
The company Piaget delighted its fans with the original novelty Altiplano Scrimshaw, equipped with a dial, made of fossilized mammoth ivory. It shows a map of the Eastern Hemisphere. It should be noted that the manufacture of such a dial requires 65 hours.

The dial with 1.7 mm thick is made of mammoth tusk, which is about 40 000 years. Images as maps and wind rose are printed by using traditional techniques Scrimshaw. This decorative carving on the bone, which is a pattern of dots and dashes, filled with pigments. This art form comes from North America. The engraving hue depends on the depth of insertion of the pigment. More deep engraving with plenty of ink gives a darker color, while gaps remain untouched natural ivory.

The engraver Richard Meyer worked over the dial.
