Within 13 years of its existence the young Swiss watch company Angular Momentum won the fame of high quality and esthetically perfect watches manufacturer and the attention of society, not indifferent to watches. The main aim of the company in creation of time indicators is the “renaissance of art”
The esthetic issue as well as the technical one is considered in the manufacture. Keeping the balance between functions and forms, composing the design on the whole, is the most difficult task in the watch designing. To emphasize the functionality the watch company created a collection of technically complicated watches “Technical Timepiece”. But the “Artisan Timepiece Collection” is characterized by the esthetic component. The fine line between the watch craftsmanship and art is fully erased in the watches of Angular Momentum Artisan Timepiece Collection.
The “brand” techniques of decoration, which are difficult to apply in an industrial process, are used in the watch manufacture. The watch company Angular Momentum uses the Verre Eglomise technique of decoration, which was widely applied in decoration of furniture in the 18th century.
The glass decoration technique consists in the following:
• the back glass is covered with gold or silver foil
• various pictures, patterns, ornaments are cut on the applied foil.
The glass gilding is a very laborious technique and it requires a jewelry accuracy and high craftsmanship. This non-traditional technique of decoration creates real miniatures from watches. The miniature art consists of the finest miniature paintings so that the pattern was most real regardless of its size.
In watch decoration Angular Momentum also applies the “urushi” technique.
Urushi is a natural varnish, obtained from the juice of tree of the same name (also named “varnish tree”). The urushi resin contains “urushiol” – wood oil, rapidly polymerizing and giving thick, smooth and shiny film. The resin of “varnish tree”, growing only in three countries of the world (China, Japan and Korea), is gathered once in a year, in the beginning of summer. The processing must start in only 3-5 years. “Urushi” is used in Japan from the 7th century. In ancient times it was used for the protection of everyday life goods from external actions (furniture, pots and pans, etc.). The lacquering of various items requires accurate work and high craftsmanship. The items are lacquered from 5 to 15 times to obtain a smooth glossy surface. Urushi may be applied by many layers – be sure, it won’t be exfoliated or rolled up. At solid state it becomes resistant to humidity, heat, spirit, acids, alkalis and solvents. Urushi is used in watchmaking as a decorative treatment. 12 layers of variously consistent varnishes are used for making disks at watch dials. Each layer is applied with the help of brush, and then the dial is put in “furo”, a special container with stable temperature of 27°C and 68% of humidity, for 24 hours. In the end the dial is polished until a smooth surface is obtained. If the dial surface isn’t smooth, the multi-colored gold sputtering is applied for outlining of engraving and creation of more realistic picture.
The creation of Email Lumineuse is a patented innovation of Angular Momentum. The Email Lumineuse is more intensive than the Super-LumiNova, which is widely used by many Swiss watch companies. The enamel is recharged by sunlight: 10-minute charge provides 35-hour luminescence. At the day time the enamel color is like a yellow vanilla, but at night it gives a pale-green intensive shine, reminding the color of shining mushrooms “Mycena lux-coeli” (they are also called “skylight mushrooms”).
The Email Lumineuse designers were inspired by shining mushrooms, which appear in Japan in rainy season. The “skylight mushrooms” grow on tree branches and in wet soil. At the night time they shine like small lights, creating an impressive and unforgettable spectacle. Such luminescence is caused by a chemical reaction, as a result of which the luciferese ferment, contacting with oxygen, evolves the energy and light.
