The Swiss Angular Momentum watch company has created a talisman watch for people, who believe in the supernatural power of some magical objects, that have the ability to keep their owners from different troubles, according to some superstitious conceptualizations.
Humanity's centuries-long history is unbreakably related to folklore beliefs and superstitions, that came to us from the oldest times as a memory of our forefathers. Talismans, amulets – all this are the first humanity ancestors' first tries to understand the surrounding world, to barricade themselves away from negative events, misfortunes and troubles. The “Il Moretto” watch's dial is decorated with a Morcis figure.
Morcic is a talisman, symbolizing the struggle against evil. It protects from troubles and misfortunes, is widely popular among Croatian seamen and fishermen.
There are multiple fables and legends, connected with this symbol's advent.
According to the first legend, the symbol of Morcic appeared in the XVI century after Croatians won the battle at Grobničko polje against the Turkish army. After the fight Grobničko polje was spangled with the Ottoman warriors' turbans. To celebrate the victory, Rijeka dwellers made earrings in the form of dark-skinned heads for their wives. After this victory the people, living in Rijeka hold an annual holiday with dressing in sheep fells and put on masks with horns and snouts of pigs.
According to another version, Morcic symbol's advent is connected with the Venetian Empire and its great impact on Croatia. During the times of its prosperity, Venice turned from a small fishermen's settlement into a powerful trade centre, playing major roles in the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas. After the sea battles at Middle East great numbers of slaves, originating from different countries, were brought. There were many Nubia (the territory of contemporary Sudan) dwellers, notable for their attractive appearance among them. In the 15th and the 16th centuries it was customary for rich families to have slaves, who had to escort women during gondola promenades. Those were usually young handsome men, dressed in beautiful colourful clothes and wearing white turbans with different adornments on their heads.
Those slaves were called “moro” or “moretto”, which sounded as “morcis” in Croatian.
The figure of Morcis is placed on a black enamel background. The watch craftsmen abstracted from the timely classics in the dial construction and accentuated their attention on innovative design.
The gold 40-mm case has a Swiss automatic movement with a Revolving-Disk-System or R.D.S. hour and minute indication system. Thanks to the innovative indication system, time is traced not by central hands, but by the revolving disks, indexing hours and minutes. The Revolving-Disk-System concept was created by Angular Momentum company in 1997. The invention was patented in Switzerland (patent number CH 686988). The R.D.S. technology was used in the Pioneer collection's watches for the first time. The bezel and the Morcis figure are decorated with jewels and precious metals. The watch's overall aesthetics is supplemented by a black alligator leather strap. |
