The Patek Philippe Nautilus has become one of the most sought-after luxury sports watches in the world. As the model approaches its 50th anniversary, it is worth revisiting how Patek Philippe celebrated the collection’s 40th anniversary in 2016 — a milestone that revealed much about the brand’s strategy for the Nautilus.
High Expectations for the Nautilus Anniversary
By 2016, collectors and enthusiasts widely expected Patek Philippe to unveil a large anniversary collection celebrating four decades of the Nautilus. Many assumed that the new models would debut during the annual Baselworld fair.
Instead, visitors encountered something unexpected. Patek Philippe presented several new watches — including Aquanaut models, Calatravas and chronographs — but there was no new Nautilus in sight.

Only several months later, in October 2016, the manufacture finally introduced its anniversary watches. Surprisingly, the celebration consisted of just two models.
Nautilus 5711P: A Platinum Interpretation
The first piece was the Nautilus 5711P, where the letter “P” indicates platinum. The watch featured a full platinum case and bracelet paired with a gradient blue dial.
As with most platinum watches produced by Patek Philippe, a small round diamond was discreetly placed between the lower lugs of the case. Due to its material, the watch was significantly heavier than the stainless-steel Nautilus 5711A, weighing around 240 grams compared to approximately 150 grams for the steel model.
One of the most notable features of the anniversary watch was the set of 12 baguette-cut white diamond hour markers. Two markers appear at 12 o’clock, while the date window occupies the position at 3 o’clock. This detail represented a rare step for Patek Philippe, which had traditionally been conservative when it came to diamond-set designs in men’s watches.
Nautilus 5976G: Anniversary Chronograph
The second anniversary piece was the Nautilus 5976G, a white-gold version of the self-winding flyback chronograph Nautilus. Inside the watch was the manufacture caliber CH 28-520 C, recognizable for its chronograph layout with a combined seconds and minutes counter.
Both anniversary watches shared a distinctive design element: a large three-dimensional inscription on the dial reading “1976 – 40 – 2016.”
For Patek Philippe, this was an unusual move. The brand rarely highlights anniversaries so visibly on the dial itself. The prominent marking divided opinions among collectors, yet it ultimately became one of the defining characteristics of the anniversary pieces.
A Strategic Move for the Nautilus Collection
Releasing only two watches for such an important anniversary may have seemed surprising, but the decision reflected a broader strategy.
First, Patek Philippe used the anniversary models to introduce diamond hour markers in men’s Nautilus watches, responding to growing demand in markets such as Southeast Asia, the United States and the Middle East. In the years that followed, gem-set watches became a much more significant part of the brand’s portfolio.
Second, the brand aimed to position the Nautilus at a higher level within its collection. At the time, most interest in the Nautilus focused on stainless-steel references — historically the most recognizable and accessible versions of the watch. By introducing platinum, diamonds and white gold, Patek Philippe began shifting attention toward more exclusive and expensive variations.
Finally, the anniversary inscription on the dial reinforced the collectible character of the watches. Limited editions from Patek Philippe are known for retaining — and often increasing — their value on the secondary market.
Limited Editions and Collector Appeal
The anniversary models were released in relatively small but significant numbers:
-
5711P – 700 pieces
-
5976G – 1,300 pieces
Despite these quantities, demand quickly exceeded supply, and both models soon traded on the secondary market with substantial premiums over their original retail prices.
Looking Ahead to the 50th Anniversary
Today, as the Nautilus approaches its 50th anniversary, the question remains how Patek Philippe will celebrate the next milestone.
Will the brand introduce new stainless-steel references? Will precious metals and gem-set versions play an even greater role?
Expectations among collectors remain exceptionally high, as the Nautilus continues to stand as one of the most recognizable and desirable watches in modern horology.
