The history of the Jaquet Droz watch house is about three centuries. The founder is Pierre Jean Droz. He was born in 1721 in the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, where he opened a workshop in 1738. In 1784 he opened a watch manufactory in London, then in Geneva, where he invited the most skillful masters-watchmakers of that time. Pierre together with his son founded a successful company to produce mechanical watches and mechanical dolls called automatons. In the 60s of the 18th century Pierre demonstrated mechanical watches and dolls to the Spanish court. At court of Ferdinand VI the king he was expecting a complete triumph there. All watches were bought up quickly. Pierre invested the resulting sum in further development of movements, animated watches with birds and fountains, music watches and automatons. Pierre's watch manufactory made great progress in micromechanics. His products were a success and distributed in different countries. The watch company even won the Chinese Court with its Emperor of Qing Dynasty, who took a great interest in watches and automatons. At that time the company was called James Cox London. It was the first among European companies that appeared in the Forbidden City. In the imperial palace still contains some magnificent pocket watches and other mechanisms.
Since the 13th century to the present the Jaquet Droz watch house is a source of inspiration for artists of the watch manufactory. Each model of wrist watches created more than 200 years ago (the Grande Second collection) may be a standard of excellence watchmaking. The design features clear lines and reflects true nobility.
The Jaquet Droz watch house was revived under the auspices of the Swatch Group. A watch range is constantly expanding. In June, the company moved into its new headquarters in Le Creux-du-Fonds.
The Jaquet Droz company creates new versions of watches that have an exclusive nature. Timepieces are being decorated with trim gold rings, pearls and precious stones. Watches decorated with gems from the Jaquet Droz watch house are not just products of high horology but also unique jewellery items.
Dials of the Fleurs du Temps wrist watch was decorated with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Watch dials are also made of minerals: quartz, onyx and meteorite. Only experienced cutters know this art, and result of their work is expressed in a limited series of 8 items or in watches performed to order. The numeral 8 is the mascot of the Jaquet Droz watch house. 8 is formed by 2 counters on the dial, what emphasizes the uniqueness of the limited series. As the embodiment of infinity, 8 is one of the watch company's symbols.
Jaquet Droz dials are being made under the technique of hot enamel called Grand Feu — the company's know-how. Some dials are under the Paillonne technique: the delicatest gold patterns manually applied on the transparent enamel basis. Proprietary blue colour is used to produce hands. Another sign, the company's signature, a clover shamrock is engraved on all watch movements. It cannot be seen with the naked eye. Bridges are decorated with a pattern called Geneva waves.
Jaquet Droz cases are made of steel, white and rose gold or ceramics.
The Jaquet Droz watch company reaches new heights using movements with advanced functions: a tourbillon, a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, a jumping hour, a retrograde moonphase indication and a chronograph.
In 2010, in Beijing, the Majestic Beijing collection, made in the colours of the Forbidden City, was presented.
In October 2010, the company presented the Grande Second SW Red Gold watch paying tribute to the sports Urban London collection. The new model combined technical excellence and impeccable elegance.
