Every year in Mexico, celebrations honouring the dead brighten up the whole country. Classified as part of UNESCO’s "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" since 2003, the "Día de los Muertos" is the most important date in the Mexican calendar.
By honouring the ones that have passed and celebrating their lives, the Mexican tradition has been exported to many parts of the world and is celebrated with many colourful decorations transcribed with caricatures of the dead that enliven the streets. As a tribute to this tradition, RJ-Romain Jerome launched in 2012 a new provocative watch design. The "Día de los Muertos" and its colourful skull tease death but also reminds each man of the inevitability of it.
RJ-Romain Jerome’s "Día de los Muertos" shines in the face of death
On November 2nd 2013, RJ-Romain Jerome will celebrate this day by launching five new timepieces, limited to 25 pieces per model. These new timepieces have been designed to shine in the face of death by decorating each model with brilliant-cut diamonds*, black sapphires or black spinels. By combining Mexican beliefs and RJ-Romain Jerome’s creativity, the "Dia de los Muertos Diamante" pushes all humans to reflect on their lives and accept their mortal fait ; Memento Mori.
Introducing a spiral setting on the bezel echoing the scrolling motifs adorning the skull on the 46 mm dial ; these models are available with either brilliant-cut diamonds or black sapphires, 108 stones have been used to create this decorative pattern, respectively totalling around 0.57 cts and 0.71 cts.
The collection is completed with two other declinations, the first with a skull set with 374 black spinels for 0.62 cts and the second reproducing the set skull and adding an entirely diamond-pavé dial of 469 stones totalling around 0.57 cts. The third model features the brand’s iconic claws and emblematic X set with 232 diamonds of approximately 0.54 cts.
By enhancing the bezel and the dial with precious stones, RJ-Romain Jerome further accentuates the contrast between the dark, deep matt and thrilling feeling of the timepieces and the shine of the stones which recall the lights of past lives.
Life is short, by accepting ones mortality ; one will live a fulfilled life. Such is the spirit of RJ-Romain Jerome and its continued mockery of death.
