Sjöö Sandström Watches

The company Sjöö Sandström is one of the few independent watch manufactures in the world. In the small workshop in the Swedish capital Stockholm, the skilled watchmakers create the wonderful watches that combine the latest technology and the modern innovative ideas of the watchmaking, but paying a special attention to the traditional details. The history of the Swedish watchmaking began from the person after whom were named a few schools, and his portrait is on the back of the Swedish currency of 500 krona. Christopher Polhem (1661-1751) was a distinguished scientist.

In the end of 17th  century that  Swedish scientist, inventor and industrialist, has made the significant contribution not only to the economy and industry of Sweden but also to the interesting for him fields, such as mathematics, mechanics and watchmaking. And it was no accident. Since the beginning of 15th  century and up to 17th   the watchmaking was the most advanced technical area in the world. The best watchmakers invented various scientific instruments and for the long time were the only people, who taught to create the precision mechanical devices. Designed the complex watch for the local vicar in exchange for Latin lessons, Polhem soon repaired the watch for the mathematics professor in exchange for lessons. Soon he successfully repaired  the incomplete astronomical watch, created  by Petrus Astronomus (the monk of Vadstena Abbey, who created in 1506 the famous watch, which had, besides the indicators of minutes and hours, the indicator of the Moon phases  and the movements of the planets).

In 1699 Polhem built automated factory, worked entirely by the water power. However, because of  the fear of workers being replaced by machines, they made in 1734 a fire which destroyed a large part of the factory except the sector, which produced the watches. Known for their high quality and relatively low prices  these watches remained popular until the early 19th  century. Till these days about 20 models of the watches per year are produced in this factory.

Exactly 100 years after the death of Polhem, the other Swedish watch-genius, Victor Kullberg (1824-1890), arrived in Copenhagen, where he began to work in the famous Swedish watch-company “Jürgensen & Sønner”. The next year, in 1850, he moved to London, which was that time the home of the best in the world chronographs. There he made his name famous as one of the best watchmakers in the history, specializing in the making of the precise pocket and hand-winding chronographs. At the International Exhibition in London in 1862 Kullberg was declared as the greatest watchmaker of that time, and in 1873 he set the world record, winning at the same time the first and third place at the London International Exhibition of chronographs. The production of Kullberg chronographs lasted until the Second World War.
