Mido Watches

Founder of «MIDO» company - Georg SchaerenThe MIDO G. Schären & Co company was established by Georges Schaeren, an experienced and ingenious watchmaker, in 1918. The name “Mido” is taken from a Spanish word “Yo mido” which means “I measure”.
In the 1902, the company produced art-deco styled models as well as watches in unique and innovative shapes, such as jewellery items or sports accessories.
In the 1930, created watches styled after the car-coolers of Bugatti, Buick, Excelsior, Peugeot, and Chevrolet. These timepieces were very popular among lovers of  four-wheeled iron horses.
MIDO developed the Aquadura sealing system in which a special cork component is used to guarantee water-resistance regardless of a crown position. This system was used in all MIDO models.
In 1934, the company launched the first anti-magnetic water-and shock-resistant watch with a self-winding movement under the name of  Multifort Automatic. The Multifort collection was made with the Aquadura system. High durability and functionality of this watch perfectly combined with original design.MIDO manufactory
In 1935, tests, having been run by a New-York's laboratory, proved that the Multifort Automatic watch met the highest quality standards, and even the most extremal conditions did not prevent from operating properly. The watch bore 1015 minute cycles under the pressure of 13 ATM and variations in temperature from – 40 to + 50  degrees Celsius. And also it operated in the rarefied atmosphere of 16,000 metres high.
In 1936, MIDO launched watches with a complicated functional movement. This technology remains unique to this day. The Multifort Center Chronograph model belongs to such watches perfectly. It is the first chronograph in the world with hands located in the centre of the dial.
In the 1940s, watches for pilots of the Swiss Air Force were designed. They won fame for their reliability and usability during the war and were produced till the 1960s.
1954 was a year of the development of the Powerwind winding system which increased running reserve and reliability by reducing the watch components from 16 to 7 pieces.
In 1959, the Monocoque (one piece) watch case was designed which was used in the Ocean Star series. These water-resistant watches were equipped with the Aquadura system and a tightening crown.
The   Commander Chronograph watch has the Valjoux movement, one of the best especially created for the MIDO sports series. The watch is equipped with the Incabloc anti-shock system that protects  balance of a 0,09 mm thickness with the Nivarox spring (a mainspring of high quality). Thanks to this technology the Mido company is considered to be a king of Swiss-made water-resistant watches.MIDO manufactory
In 1967, the company launched miniature self winding watches for women called Mini Mido. At the same time electronic watches started to be manufactured.
The Baroncelli collection appeared in 1976. The Timeless Classic model, devoted to a stringed instrument, embodies accuracy and rhythm.
In 1977, the MIDO company produced 29,074 certified chronometres.
In 1985, the company became the property of the Swatch Group.
In 1995, the Bodyguard and Worldtimer high-technology models were made. Worldtimer was the first analog watch which indicated the local time zone anywhere in the world. This model was easy-to-use. Bodyguard acted as a personal security assistant by providing the user with an integrated security alarm of over 100 decibels. The watch was specially produced for Brazil where the crime rate was very high.
MIDO watch mechanismIn 1998, in honor of its 80's anniversary the company restored the Multifort to life. It was made in style of the 40s and had a quartz movement and Arabic numerals.
MIDO watches are produced of the best materials. Bracelets and cases are made of jewelry steel 316L, straps are of high-quality leather. Sapphire glasses with an anti-reflective coating being resistant to scratching guarantee perfect vision of the dial. MIDO uses the ETA titanium products, because this metal is 30% more solid and 50 % more light than steel, absolutely hypoallergic and used in the space industry and surgery. High precision of a movement is provided by careful control and adjustment at three positions. Run precision of a movement is documented with the COSC certificate. The MIDO standards: the precision of a chronometer is -4/+6 sec per day, for classical models - 5/+15 sec per day. In some models a movement is seen through a transparent backcase.
In 2002, the All Dial collection launched. Given a glance to watches, you will form an impression that hands and a dial only exist.
In 2006, the Baroncelli Gent model was produced. It had a power-reserve and a sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating. It looked elegant and restrained.
In 2007, MIDO presented the Moon Phase Automatic Chronograph model of calibre 1321 from the All Dial collection. It had a calender and a moonphase indicator.
In 2008, the belluna collection of the art-deco style was created.
The JMT model, an automatic watch from the Baroncelli series, was designed in 2009.
In Switzerland, the country of watch brands, the MIDO company is considered to be one of the leading producers of Swiss watches.
